//Thoughts on the Jailbreak Scene

Originally posted on T3chH3lp by Sean Zahrae

With iOS4 finally out and thousands of iPhone and iPod touch users flocking towards the new operating system, many people are finding themselves disappointed with the features that were allowed on their device.  All idevices (except for the original iPhone and the iPod Touch 1 gen) get the new springboard dock and basic features such as folders and a unified inbox, but Apple has disabled other features such as multitasking or home screen wallpapers on all devices other than the 3GS and the new iPhone 4.  With these key features missing, users feel left out in the cold unless they slap down another $200 or more for an ungraded device.

Enter:Jailbreaking

Jailbreaking is a common term used among iPhone enthusiats that refers to a process where an application called Cydia is installed on the iDevice and allows for any code, third party applications and add-ons not approved by Apple, to be installed on the iPhone or iPod. With iOS 4, however, jailbreaking opens up features in iOS 4 locked down by Apple to users with devices lower than the 3GS or iPod touch 3G.

With all these features missing from iOS4 enabled with just a few clicks, thousands of iPhone 3G and iPod touch users are jailbreaking their devices without the faintest idea of what jailbreaking really does:

Advantages:

With advantages, however, come disadvantages…

Disadvantages:

Personally, I’m on a different carrier than AT&T which requires my iPhone 3GS to be unlocked and jailbroken, Even if I was with an offical carrier (AT&T), however, I’m sure that I would still eventaully jailbreak.  The way that I intend to use my iPhone is close to that of a power user with Cydia applications and addons that help me with daily tasks. With that said, take a look at Jailbreaking and see what it can offer you, if the pros outweigh the cons, go ahead and check it out! If you don’t like it, just plug it into iTunes and just click restore.

//Google dumps Windows

Originally posted on T3chH3lp by Sean Zahrae

Remember the Google China (Google.cn) hacking incident where Google claims that some of their source code was stolen through a vulnerability in the ever so popular Internet Explorer packaged with the Microsoft Windows Operating System?  I mean it’s no secret with IT employees that Windows requires more security work than other Operating System, but Google seems to be taking the hit pretty hard. As of June 1st, Google unofficially announced that they plan on dumping the entire Windows OS from all of it’s systems and offering all Google employees: Macs or PC’s running Linux.  If I didn’t know better, I’d say that Google is blaming Microsoft for it’s intellectual property leak (hint hint…)  Bitterness? maybe…but Google has a point.  Although Microsoft is somewhat adept at patching Windows with updates, the OS has a multitude of security issues and Google might be saving millions of dollars in wasted time used to configuring, maintaining, and general upkeep on these PC’s (not to mention the cost of 20,000+ Windows licenses).

//Palm IS Dead, Android and Apple?

Somewhat similar to what popular tech enthusiast Kevin Rose claims (although he give several options as to what Palm can do to try and save themselves), I also believe that Palm is dead.  It’s what Apple does to corporations and markets, they enter with a product that no other companies can compete with (the iPhone) and kill off the older brands because their companies are too slow to recognize the threat.  Palm’s WebOS was an amazing operating system for the smartphone.  It offered a nice interface, multitasking, and even came in a pretty concise package; but its lack of applications killed it prematurely.  The only phone I can see myself getting the the future (Note: i have an iPhone now) is one of the Google Phones.  Android’s market (vs. Apple’s App Store) has a decent amount of Apps that have what a smartphone user wants in todays market.  The Nexus One, for example, destroys the iPhone when it comes to pure hardware aspects, yet the iPhone still holds the majority of the market purely because it was here before Android and it holds the Apple branding.
